About the book

This edition of the book Secondary Social Science has been modified as per the latest syllabus issued by the CBSE for Class X. The earlier editions of the book have been very well received by the students and teachers of the subject. This encouraged us to bring out this modified edition.

The book comprises of four units, namely, India and the contemporary World II, Contemporary India II, Democratic politics II and Understanding Economic Development. The unit of Disaster Management no longer forms a part of the current syllabus. Consequently, the unit has been removed from the book.

All the topics have been covered is great details. The lucid language facilitates conceptual understanding of the students.

UNIT 1: INDIA AND THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD II

The text matter has been prepared purely and strictly according to the latest syllabus. However, for reasons of continuity initiative has been taken to include some in-between periods or topics which were necessary to maintain the continuation. This has been done partly to prevent the rupture in the comprehension of the historical process and partly because sometimes questions may actually be asked on these periods or topics also. While revising this unit, the NCERT’s book and sample paper of the CBSE have been kept in mind. Thus, this unit has practically been written.

Efforts have been made to make the matter useful to the young readers. The unit has been illustrated with maps and photographs to make it more useful as well as interesting.

UNIT 2: CONTEMPORARY INDIA II

This unit deals with the Geographical aspects of the social sciences and touches the subject of Resources and their Development.

The Chapters have been divided as per the thematic distribution by NCERT. The Salient Features of the unit are:

  1. Simple, easy to understand, reader-friendly language for an easy grasp on the subject.
  2. Updated maps, references, charts and illustrations to ably support the text matter.
  3. Interesting and useful information given in boxes.
  4. Projects and activities included as per CBSE guidelines to enable the students to gather extra information.
  5. Large number of exercises on the patterns of CBSE Board Examination at the end of each chapter.
  6. Maps have been provided at the end of chapters to locate or identify various places/regions or self-assess their knowledge by students from the related questions.

UNIT 3: DEMOCRATIC POLITICS II

This unit enables the students to understand the central theme of Democracy in lucid manner.

Democracy is not only a form of government; it is a social philosophy also. Democracy is the most popular form of government in the modern world. CBSE has done a good job by introducing it as a full-fledged course for the young citizens of the largest democracy of the world.

Attempt has been made to make the language very easy and clear so that the readers understand each and every aspect of democracy fully well. This will help them very much in their practical life when they grow up.

Some chapters have been rearranged. This has been done because of the importance of those topics as also to develop a better understanding among students about them.

Maps, figures and photographs have been given at appropriate places for better understanding and to make the book more interesting and useful. While preparing the book the standard set by the NCERT has been kept in mind.

UNIT 4: UNDERSTANDING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The matter in this unit has been divided into five chapters confirming to the requirements of the syllabus.
